AWA to research factors which impact people’s cognitive fitness
Workplace change management consultancy Advanced Workplace Associates has launched a research project on cognitive fitness, to identify the factors that have an impact on the functioning of the brain. The aim is to show organisations how they can create the social and physical conditions to get people’s brains fitter so that individuals operate at their best.
AWA is working with the Centre for Evidence Based Management in Amsterdam (CEBMa) to identify and quantify the impact of these factors, which could include hydration, sleep, air quality, nutrition, fitness, posture, and movement. Some of the factors will be under the control of the individual, but some will be within the gift of the business to effect.
In addition to carrying out a rapid evidence assessment of the available research and translating them into useful outputs, AWA will also be running trials to apply the results of the research to see if we can discern a difference in performance. The academic research will be completed by the end of July, with the first results from the trials due by the end of the year.
Research sponsors include accountancy firm BDO, UK-centred bank RBS, furniture manufacturers Allsteel and Kinnarps, and MyCognition, a science-based company dedicated to improving cognitive health.
“Each person within an organisation is a cognitive athlete. This research is about creating the right conditions for people’s cognitive performance to be at its very best,” explained Andrew Mawson, MD of AWA. “If everyone within an organisation worked at their very best, then the impact on an organisation’s productivity and bottom line would be enormous.”
This research follows a project last year which established the factors that influence knowledge worker productivity. Advanced Workplace Associates, again working with CEBMa, carried out a rapid evidence assessment spanning over 800 studies before translating them into the six factors which influence knowledge worker productivity: social cohesion, perceived supervisory support, information sharing, vision/ goal clarity, external communications, and trust in team members, supervisors and management.
CEBMa provides support and resources to managers, consultants, teachers, academics and others interested in learning more about evidence-based management. Its mission is to bridge the gap between scientific research and management practice. CEBMa is supported by several leading universities, including Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, New York University, University of Toronto, University of Bath and the Free University of Amsterdam.
